The tools people use, and why.

“Final products are converted to relevant formats and stored along with the rest of my life in Dropbox.”

“Zencastr records the audio in high quality at everyone's end, so even if the VoIP goes wobbly you've still got a clean recording - which it then dumps into Dropbox or wherever.”

“Via Chrome I access Google Drive, which is my main form of design documentation, and Asana for personal task management.”

“I am pretty angry about the state of Google Drive, which has a set of user experience patterns that makes me wonder if the designers are paid by the number of new files created, rather than by the number of old files found.”

“What was the roadblock I was having with Time Machine backups?”

“Currently it just runs Time Machine backups and stores audio files, but I want to set up a VPN soon and store some media on there that I can access when away from home.”

“My Backblaze is currently broken and I haven't figured out how to fix it yet but technically I back up to that as well as Time Machine locally.”

“I have my entire 30+ TB archive backed up in the cloud using Backblaze B2 cloud storage.”

“I've experimented with writing and editing in SimpleNote, and had some success syncing drafts between Scrivener on my desktop and my phone or iPad, but Mail is where I end up.”

“It's also fully searchable and you can sync all of your "notes" to the cloud with simplenote.”

“To continue the backup story, I'm a SuperDuper! guy to clone drives nightly.”

“SuperDuper! is a critical part of my software setup.”

“I've used Wunderlist in the past but it always turned into a trash pile of wishes more than an actual actionable to-do list.”

“I use Wunderlist to keep track of all my tasks.”

“Simplenote is the app I use for the raw ideas (and my grocery list).”

“And I've been using Simplenote to take notes on literally everything for the past ten years (which reminds me I really should backup my Simplenote archive.”

“I deploy my web apps to S3 using Amazon's S3 tools.”

“CloudApp - I capture a lot of screen shots, mainly to share work with co-workers and to attach interaction demos to pull requests.”

“I use CloudApp for sharing design work with my coworkers and peers.”

“I guess I like many of the little things like iCloud sync for my history/bookmarks to my phone, the favorites tab and that it feels like a Mac app.”

“This is actually the only reason I have an iCloud account; I realized that my Notes files were the one important thing I wouldn't be able to get back if my work laptop got stolen.”

“Almost forgot, Crashplan for my remote data backup.”

“And Mat Honan recently scared me into getting a Crashplan account for backups.”

“At home on the Mac, I use a nice program called Arq, which also backs up to S3.”

“It's also got Office and Dropbox, so I have work wherever I go.”

“I have DropBox which is great if I want to preview some of my computer documents on the go.”

“Then, just for good measure, I clone the entire 1.5 GB Time Capsule to another USB drive via rsync.”

“I use rsync to backup my documents and media to the cloud.”

“For that, I use Benjamin Pierce's excellent Unison.”

“To keep all of my files synchronized across the machines I own, I use Unison, a great program that seems to have never gained the traction it deserves.”

“I use offlineimap for syncing email around on all of the different systems I use.”

“I used Mozy for online backup and I have to say it sucked balls, like worse than any service I have ever used.”

“I also use Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable full-disk backup images.”

“My remote backups are handled and sent to the cloud by Jungle Disk.”

“Jungle Disk copies everything offsite hourly.”

“Kindle I use a fair bit now.”

“When I need to share documents, manage calendars, set appointments, or do video chats, I use my own Nextcloud server.”

“On my virtual host, I run Nextcloud as a file server and to sync calendars, contacts, notes, tasks, and such between my computers and phone.”

“I keep my projects on OneDrive.”

“I use BitTorrent to avail myself of the wealth of human artistry, and that's one thing I'm not conflicted on -- I have plenty of cultural karma in the bank.”

“By day, I analyze data at BitTorrent; by evening, I'm dad to @CalvinChaos; by night, I design electronic kits as Applied Platonics; by morning, I'm sleep deprived and grumpy.”

“I keep a full backup of all my machines on Carbonite, which I love for two reasons.”

“I use Time Machine and IBM's centralized backup servers to back up my work machines; at home I use Carbonite.”

“I share pictures and files through the blazingly fast Cloudup.”

“For syncing between machines, I run OwnCloud on a server (also Ubuntu) that lives under my couch at home.”

“I share files between my desktop and laptop using Sync.”

“But Symantec made it all bloated and expensive, so I switched to Acronis True Image.”
